What’s a podcast?

Published by Timothy Sullivan

Almost every week, we release a new episode of the Selling Geek podcast — a recorded audio show that is transmitted through the Internet to listeners. You, the audience, can listen to recordings of Selling Geek whenever you want, and in a variety of very convenient ways:

  • By going to this website and clicking the “play” button on the built-in audio player wherever you find it on the site
  • By downloading the compressed audio file (called an “MP3 formatted file”) to your computer, and listening to the show using your computer’s audio playback software, such as iTunes or Windows Media Player, or on a portable MP3 player such as an Apple iPod or Microsoft Zune.
  • By installing a “podcatcher” application on your computer, such as iTunes or Juice, and subscribing to an “RSS feed”, which automatically downloads the latest show to your computer whenever one is published

The third option, which uses a technology called “RSS” (Really Simple Syndication), is by far the most convenient way to receive podcasts. With a podcatcher application installed on your computer, you can subscribe to podcasts you enjoy, and they’ll be sent to you as they are produced, so you can enjoy them whenever you wish. And the best part is this: virtually all podcatcher applications are free, as are just about all podcasts.

How do I subscribe to the Selling Geek podcast?

Wow! Podcasts are cool - what else can you tell me about them?

There are literally thousands of podcasts available, covering virtually every conceivable subject. To see what we mean, check out these useful podcast directories: The Podcast Pickle, Podcast Alley.

It’s a common misconception that you need an Apple iPod to enjoy podcasts. In fact, most people don’t listen to podcasts on iPods — they simply play them online, or listen to them on their computers, or play them on other MP3 players. If you’ve got an iPod, you’ll find iTunes the easiest way to subscribe and listen to podcasts. If not, you’ve got lots of other ways to enjoy podcasts, too.

Perhaps the best explanation of podcasting we’ve ever seen is Grunt Media’s video explanation:
What is podcasting?

Selling Geek hopes that this little overview of podcasting has helped enlighten you about this exciting new form of media. Now, why not give one of our shows a listen? Click here and then you, too, can subscribe today!
